Thomas E. Shulstad

Thomas E. Shulstad, 91, of Pelican Rapids, MN, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 3, 2021, at Pelican Valley Senior Living, Pelican Rapids, Minnesota.

Thomas E. Shulstad was born September 4, 1929, at home in rural Barnesville to Oscar and Hilda (Grundset) Shulstad.  He attended country school and graduated from Barnesville High School in 1947.  As a young boy, he and his brother Gordon had to take over the family farm for their disabled father while his older brothers were serving in the military.  He continued to dairy and grain farm near Barnesville and Pelican Rapids until retirement. 

On October 21, 1951, Thomas Shulstad was united in marriage with Ann Marie Nelson at Rollag Lutheran Church. Together they were blessed with seven children. After retiring, they moved from their farm to Prairie Lake, and in 2005 they moved to Pelican Rapids, MN.

Thomas enjoyed hunting and fishing.  He loved cutting wood and helping on the farm.  He spent a lot of time in the garden and taking care of his lawn.  His grandchildren and great grandchildren were the love of his life.  He always had cookies and candy for them to enjoy.  After retirement, Thomas and his wife Ann Marie enjoyed traveling. He was a member of North Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural Pelican Rapids and served on the church council. 

Thomas is survived by his children, Thomas (Jane) Shulstad, Karl (Patricia) Shulstad, Sheila (Russell) Emerson, Philip (Robbie) Shulstad, Jacquelyn (Mark) Scott, David (Christie) Shulstad and daughter-in-law, Susan Shulstad; 18 grandchildren , Amy (Alan) Hodenfield, Nathan (Ali) Shulstad, Eric Shulstad, Chris (Valerie) Shulstad, Matt (Julianna) Shulstad, Josh (Cara) Shulstad, Michael (April) Scott, Andrew (Alexis) Scott, Alyssa Scott, Joe (Jess) Shulstad, Katie (Tyrell) Nordick, Amanda (Kevin) Backstrom, Adam (Kathryn) Shulstad, Tyler (Devin) Scott, Falon (Alex) Whittier, Peter (Abby) Scott, Nichole (Nolan) Jeral, Bailey (Spencer) Christianson and 28 great grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his wife Ann Marie in February 2020, his parents, son Daniel Paul Shulstad, daughter-in-law Debbie Shulstad, and great grandchildren Colton Shulstad, Maxwell Scott and Eddie Whittier and his siblings: Orris, Harland, Norman, Gordon, Genevieve, Gertrude, Pearl, and Esther. 

Funeral services will be 11:00 AM, Wednesday, April 7, 2021 at North Immanuel Lutheran Church in rural Pelican Rapids, MN with Pastor Isaiah Bai officiating.  There will be a live stream of Thomas’ Funeral Service, go to Thomas’ obituary page on our website, and scroll down to the bottom and the service will begin at 11:00 a.m.  The funeral service will also be uploaded at a later time to our website if you are unable to attend the live stream.

Walk through visitation will be from 5-7 pm, Tuesday, April 6, 2021 at Larson Funeral Home in Pelican Rapids, MN. 

Burial will be in Rollag Lutheran Cemetery, Rollag, MN.
