Orlean Palmer Rudie, age 93, of Pelican Rapids, passed away peacefully on March 27, 2025, after a battle with cancer. He was born on June 13, 1931, at Pelican Rapids Hospital, to Peter and Olga Rudie. Orlean grew up on the family farm, alongside his brothers, Norman and Vernon, becoming the third generation to live there, and where he and Pat made their home and raised their family.
He was baptized and confirmed at Grove Lake Church, where he remained a lifelong member. Orlean attended country school and graduated from Pelican Rapids High School with the Class of 1949. During his senior year, he lost both his parents, leaving his brothers and him to run the family farm. He then enlisted in the Air Force and proudly served his country from 1950 to 1954. Upon his discharge, he attended the North Dakota State School of Science and the Brown Institute of Electronics in Minneapolis to pursue a career as an electrician. During school, summers were spent working for the railroad.
On March 22, 1958, Orlean married Patricia Nettestad and they spent the next five years in Minneapolis. Their marriage of 67 years was a testament to their unwavering commitment. Together, they raised five children: Scott (Carol), Jeff (Patti), Pam (Vaun Bruhn), Dave (Barb), and Teresa (Erin Anderson). His family was his pride and joy, and he cherished every moment spent with them and his 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Always their biggest fan, he enjoyed attending the sports and activities of his children and grandchildren.
Orlean was a devoted member of Grove Lake Church, he served as Church Council President and was a member of the Grove Lake Men's Group. He dedicated 20 years to the Boy Scouts and was a member of the American Legion.
He had a great sense of humor, loved to tease and tell jokes, and was always quick to bring laughter to those around him. A true family man, Orlean was hardworking, kind, and soft-hearted. He was a proud veteran and was known for his handy skills, ability to fix anything with a bit of ingenuity, and a knack for "Jerry-rigging" if needed. He was always willing to lend a helping hand.
His love for the outdoors was evident in his passion for hunting, fishing, and attending sporting events. Orlean was an avid Vikings and Twins fan and enjoyed spirited pool games at the Pool Hall with “the Gang.”
He is survived by his beloved wife, Pat; his children and their spouses; his brother-in-law, Dean (Jane) Nettestad; his sister-in-law, Darlene Bontjes; his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Orlean was preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Olga Rudie; his brothers, Norman (Helen) and Vernon; an infant brother and sister; his in-laws, Harry and Esther Nettestad; his sister-in-law, Julie Pearson; and his daughters-in-law, Lisa Rudie and Carla Rudie.
Orlean leaves behind a life that will live on through the hearts of those who knew and loved him. His final wish was granted when he was able to live his last days on the farm.
Well done, good and faithful servant. Rest in Jesus' peace.
