Joan Jackson, loving wife, doting mother, and loyal friend, left this world peacefully on March 15, 2025, at her residence in Pelican Rapids, Minnesota, surrounded by cherished memories, the love of her family and the tranquility only lake life can provide. Born on September 21, 1937, in Ponca City, Oklahoma, Joan lived a life rich in service and devotion to those around her.
In 1959, following her graduation from Oklahoma University with a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education, Joan's passion for education and community engagement led her to be initiated into her mother’s chapter of P.E.O. (Philanthropic Educational Origination) a commitment she maintained throughout her life across five chapters nationwide. Her remarkable dedication culminated in her election to the Minnesota State Executive Board in 1989, where she served with distinction as President in 1995-1996.
Joan's boundless spirit and dedication extended beyond P.E.O. She was an ardent volunteer, deeply involved in her children’s schools, her church, and the greater community. Her initiatives included significant contributions to the Children's Hospital Guild and the Junior League. Her commitment to making the world a better place was matched only by her love for her family—and those who knew her treasured the "good hugs" she freely gave.
Family time spent at the lake holds a special place in the hearts of her loved ones, where laughter, warmth, and a sense of togetherness thrived. Joan was proud of her children's accomplishments, supporting daughter Kimberly (Jon) and son Douglas (Chelsea), as well as welcoming the joy brought by her granddaughter, Caroline, who illuminated her life with love and laughter.
Beyond her family and community service, Joan pursued hobbies that brought her joy, including crafts, needlepoint, cross-stitch, puzzles, word games, and mahjongg. She found peace and beauty in bird watching, particularly in seeking out cardinals, and was known for capturing stunning sunsets in photographs—each depicting her appreciation for the simple wonders in life.
In her youth, Joan showcased an indomitable spirit and competitive edge as an athlete. With no girls' tennis teams available, she practiced with the boys, ultimately claiming the title of Oklahoma State Champion Runner-up and winning the Kansas State Championship in tennis.
Joan's legacy is intertwined with the love of her dear husband, Gordon Douglas Jackson, who preceded her in death, along with her paternal and maternal grandparents Delbert and Hannah Marshall and Perry and Fannie Linch, and her parents John and Sarah Marshall. Each of these individuals shaped the remarkable woman Joan became, and their memories live on through the countless lives she touched.
In celebrating Joan's life, we honor her unwavering love, generous spirit, and profound impact on those around her. Her memory will forever remain etched in the hearts of her family and friends. As we reflect on her life, we find comfort in knowing that her legacy of love and kindness will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Later this summer, Joan will be laid to rest alongside her husband, parents, and grandparents in Wichita, KS, in a private ceremony with the families of Kimberly and Douglas.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the PEO Foundation. Foundation trustees distribute money donated to the Undesignated Fund to each of the six P.E.O. projects. They consist of the Educational Loan Fund, the International Peace School Fund, the Program for Continuing Education, Scholar Awards, the Star Scholarship, and the Cottey College Fund. This money has a significant impact on the overall support P.E.O. can offer to help women reach their educational goals.
