Janice "Jan" Buck

Janice “Jan” Buck, age 87, of Pelican Rapids, MN, passed away July 25, 2020 at Riverfront on Main with her family by her side. Jan was born to the late Gladys Ross on March 8, 1933, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She was raised in Campbell, MN, by her mom and grandparents. She attended school in Campbell and graduated high school in 1951. After graduation, she and her best friend Marlys set out on an adventure and moved to Seattle, WA. While living in Seattle, Jan worked for the Cub Scouts of America and Bausch and Lomb. On June 25, 1954, she married Fred Buck in Campbell, MN. They made their home in Fairmount, ND until they moved to West Fargo, ND and later Moorhead, MN. In 1975, Fred and Jan moved to Lake Lizzie in rural Pelican Rapids. Jan loved living at the lake. She enjoyed entertaining family and friends year-round. In 1997 Jan and Fred moved into Pelican Rapids, where Jan remained living until her death. Often at the end of her life, she would say she wanted to go “home”, and all her children knew she wanted to go back to Lake Lizzie. Jan was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church for many years participating in circle, the annual Lutefisk Supper, and the Christian Clowns. She taught Sunday School and Bible School for many years. She was also on the planning committee for the Zion Lutheran 75th Anniversary and spent countless hours with other church members refurbishing the church pews, painting and cleaning for the celebration. She also enjoyed the years her grandchildren were able to participate in Bible School at Zion. Jan's powerful faith could be seen in the work she did with the Zion Lutheran community. Her strong faith was passed onto to her children and grandchildren. Jan worked outside the home in various positions. However, her favorite positions were always working in retail stores. She started in retail at Blacks Department Store in Moorhead and ended her retail career at Norby’s in Detroit Lakes. Jan loved to shop for her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren - there could never be enough. Grandma Jan always made sure she had plenty of goodies on hand for the kids when they came to visit. Jan’s family will greatly miss her. Jan is survived by her four children: Brad (Cheryl) Buck, Tenstrike, MN, Jolene Rikhus (Kevin Sather) Audubon, MN, Curtis (Laurie) Buck, Pelican Rapids, MN and Barbara (Paul) Bougie, Fargo, ND; grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Sarah Rikhus and daughter Hailey, Stephanie (Tyler) Schenck and their children Nora and Cameron, Samuel (Chelsey) Buck, Andrew Buck, Heidi (Nick) Toso and son Sutton and Anna Buck (Fiancé Alex Whitlow); sister Claudia (James) DeVries, Wahpeton, ND; and brother and sister-in-law Clarence (Lorraine) Bladow, Perham, MN. She is preceded in death by her husband Fred in 2000; mother and stepfather Gladys and Raymond Ross and in-laws: Fred and Leone Buck. The family would like to thank Knute Nelson Hospice of Alexandria and the caring staff at Riverfront on Main in Pelican Rapids for taking such great care of Jan from when she first moved in until her last day.
