Harold Patrick Marty

March 17, 1961 — May 9, 2018

Colonel (Retired) Harold Patrick Marty, 57, passed away May 9, 2018 at his home in Peachtree City, Georgia. A funeral Mass was held in Georgia. Pat’s family is bringing him home and planning a memorial gathering for Saturday, June 30, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. in St. Leonard’s Catholic Church (Pelican Rapids, MN) lower level. Burial will follow at St. Leonard’s Catholic Cemetery in rural Pelican Rapids, MN, with Deacon Joe Hilber officiating. Born to Mary and Harold R. Marty on March 17, 1961, in Pelican Rapids, Minnesota, Marty was the eldest of seven children. He graduated from Pelican Rapids High School with the Class of ‘79. He earned his Master of Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College in 2005, Master of Science in Logistics from Florida Institute of Technology in 1995, Bachelor of Science in Industrial Technology from Minnesota State University, Moorhead in 1984 and Agriculture Degree from North Dakota State University in 1983. He joined the U.S. Army R.O.T.C. in 1979. After graduation he was part of the 82nd Airborne based in Fort Bragg, NC, where he logged over 100 jumps, and later earned Ranger status with the Army. Colonel Marty served numerous overseas tours throughout his 30-year United States Army career, including wartime tours in Desert Storm, Iraqi Freedom and US Forces-Afghanistan. Marty retired from the career he loved as Colonel for the U.S. Army in November 2009 with 30 years’ service. After retirement, Marty worked as Chief of Strategic Planning/Performance Measures Branch in Atlanta’s U.S. General Services Administration. Marty was a devoted volunteer with his church and with the Boy Scouts of America. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, fishing, camping, reading, learning and creating pranks. He had an irresistible sense of humor and uncanny ability to observe and recall minute detail – lovingly given the nickname “Seymour” because he saw/noticed more than most expected that he would!  Marty’s survivors include his daughter, Christina Marty (Atlanta, Georgia); son, Alex Marty (Statesboro, Georgia); brothers Mike (Lori) Marty (Pelican Rapids, Minnesota) and Tony Marty (Minneapolis, Minnesota); sisters Kathy (Randy) Josephson (Harrisonburg, Virginia), Mary (Brian) Norberg(Dilworth, Minnesota), Jeanne (Bob) Gettel (Underwood, Minnesota) and Maggie (Brad) Johnson (Pelican Rapids, Minnesota), numerous nieces and nephews and his close friend, Lisa Hunter (Peachtree City, Georgia). He was preceded in death by his parents, Mary and Harold R. Marty, grandparents Anne and Edward Dullea and Margaret and Leo Marty.  In lieu of flowers or gifts please support “The Eden Project”, a U.S. soldier support and reintegration foundation (https://www.eden-project.com).
