Ferdinand Bakken

Ferdinand Kenneth Bakken, died peacefully Friday, February 8, 2019, at Woodland Lodge in Fergus Falls, MN at the age of 88. Ferdinand Bakken was born March 19, 1930 at home in Scambler Township to Thorwald and Gusta (Teigen) Bakken. He was baptized and confirmed at Grove Lake Lutheran Church near Pelican Rapids.  He went to different country schools through the 8th grade, then had to stay home to help on the family farm when his brother went off to World War II. In his youth he was active in 4-H and during the summer played baseball in the town league with his neighborhood friends. On June 30, 1953, Ferdie was united in marriage to Anne Benson at the Grove Lake parsonage in Pelican Rapids. They made their home on the family farm northwest of Pelican Rapids which his father bought in 1939. He farmed his entire life, milking cows before raising strictly beef cows.  He resided at the farm until moving to town in February 2016.  He enjoyed country and gospel music; and had a wonderful singing voice. His interests included watching and listening to all sports.  He especially loved the Twins, Gophers, and the Vikings.  He also enjoyed his late afternoon “sundowner.” Ferdinand was a lifetime member of Grove Lake Lutheran Church. Ferdinand is survived by his five children: Robin and his children, Ryan & Lorie (Tanner); Sheila (Dan) Saurer and their children, Janelle (Wayne), Jodi (Jason) & Luke; Tim (Julie) and their children Angie (Shawn), Tanya (Billy) & Jeremy (Julia); Lee (Jill) and their children Brody & Kale; Trudy and her sons Blaine & Jay. He is also survived by 14 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Anne; his siblings: Garfield, Olivia, Eunice, Evelyn, Ellen, Gerald (Bud), Arleen, Ardy, Loretta & Myrna. Visitation:  Wednesday, February 13, 2019 from 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m., at Grove Lake Lutheran Church, near Pelican Rapids, Minnesota.  Service: 2 p.m., Wednesday, February 13, 2019 at Grove Lake Lutheran Church, rural Pelican Rapids, Minnesota with Pastor Tessa Hansen officiating.
