Esther Hook

Esther Affeld (Boettcher) Hook, age 95, of Pelican Rapids, MN, died Monday, June 11, 2018 at Pelican Valley Health Center in Pelican Rapids, MN. Esther was born May, 31, 1923 in Los Angeles, CA, to Paul and Sophie (Emkee) Boettcher. She lived in Cypress, then moved to Beaumont for primary school, and later graduated from Anaheim High School. Esther attended and graduated from Biola Institute (Biola University) with a major in Biblical/Missionary studies. In the summer, she served with the American Sunday School Union Camps for kids. After college she was a secretary at Santa Ana Church where she also taught Sunday school. Esther went to Cuba for missionary work for 2 years. On September 27, 1951 Esther married Virgil Hook in Hong Kong. For 23 years she was a missionary for OMF (Overseas Missionary Fellowship) serving in China and Taiwan. She was the last group to go to China, called the “49’ ers,” before China was closed. In the early 1970’s she retired from the missionary field and moved to Paradise, California, where she was a cook for a daycare and involved in church ministry as a pastor’s wife. Parents said, “Esther was pleasant, caring, and thoughtful with the children.” After Virgil passed in December 1991, she moved back to her roots in L.A. and cooked for disabled relatives. They described Esther as a “blessing to their family.” In May of 2009 Esther moved to Bob and Karen’s home in Pelican Rapids. In January of 2016, she moved into the Pelican Valley Health Center. She is survived by her 4 children: Jan (Cheryl) Hook, IL; Dave (Mary) Hook, IL; Karen (Bob) Satterlie, MN; Brian (Susan) Hook, CA; 12 grandchildren: Joshua (Jenn) Hook, Aron Hook, Tyler Hook, Jordan (Peter) Marshall, Chris (Karen) Satterlie, Mike Satterlie, Matt (Talitha) Satterlie, Adam Satterlie, Andrew Satterlie, Kristi (Mike) Greenlee, Ashley Hook, and Tobin Hook; 5 great-grandchildren: Grace Marshall, Juliette Satterlie, Elle Greenlee, Hollyn Greenlee, and Mackson Greenlee; sister, Helen Beatty, CA; brother, Stan (Rosemarie) Boettcher, CA; Janie (Jeff) Moore, CA; and many nieces and nephews. ­­­­Esther is preceded in death by her parents; husband, brother, Harold and sister, Sylvia.
