Charles "Chuck" Berg

Charles Berg, 73, passed away on May 4, 2023, at his home in Detroit Lakes under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley with his loving family by his side.

Charles “Chuck” Byron Berg was born December 26, 1949 in Pelican Rapids, MN the son of Norman and Inez (Randklev) Berg. He graduated from Pelican Rapids High School in 1967. Chuck worked for Starman’s Meat in Pelican Rapids prior to enlisting in the U.S. Army. He received basic training and AIT at Fort Lewis in Washington. Chuck was deployed to Vietnam where he was in the infantry with the 1st Air Calvary from January 1969 to January 1970. During his duty he received 2 Purple Hearts, the Bronze Star, Air Medal, Vietnam Service Campaign Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, and National Defense Medal. Chuck’s unit, Delta Company, 2nd of the 5th Air Calvary Division also received 2 Presidential Unit Citations.

Following his tour, he was united in marriage with Geraldine Leabo on February 14, 1970, at Faith Lutheran Church in Pelican Rapids. They lived in Pelican Rapids from 1970 until 2007. Chuck worked as a plant foreman at ORD manufacturing from 1970- 1976, Johnson-Richard’s Flooring from 1976-1989, co-owned Chuck and Dave’s Carpet from 1989-1997, V.F.W. gaming manager from 1997-2007, managed Nordic Apartments from 2000-2005, and retired in 2007.

They treasured their winters in Arizona where they spent time with sons and their families. During their time living in Pelican Rapids, they were blessed to have spent time over summer months on their cabin at Star Lake, where many great memories were made. They moved to Detroit Lakes in 2012.

Chuck was active at Faith Lutheran Church serving on church council and served as V.F.W. commander. Chuck enjoyed working outside, hunting, fishing, and lake life. He had a passion for cars and enjoyed many rides with friends in the summer with the top down. He loved woodcrafts of any kind, but his first priority was always time with his precious grandchildren and family.

Chuck is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Geri of Detroit Lakes; son Chris (Brooke) and their children: Stella and Hank from Paradise Valley, AZ, son Nick (Jenn) and their 3 sons: Ryder, Kameron, & Mason from Peoria, AZ; brothers: David (Carolyn) Berg, Doug (June) Berg, and Mike (Linda) Berg; sisters: LaVonne (Vern) Benson and Ilene Tehven; along with many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He is preceded in death by his parents; in-laws Marvin and Kathleen Leabo; nephew Chad Fosmark, brothers-in-law: Emery Fosmark and Lowell Tehven.

In lieu of flowers memorials preferred to Faith Lutheran Church, Hospice of the Red River Valley, or Wishes for Warriors.

Memorial Gathering will be Saturday, May 13, 2023, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church, Pelican Rapids, MN.
