Beverly Slotten, age 87 of Lake Lizzie near Pelican Rapids, MN began her new life with Christ on August 27, 2020 while at home with her family by her side. Beverly Ann (Kurtz) Slotten known as “Bev” was born December 18, 1932 in Wahpeton, North Dakota, the daughter of Henry and Irene (Bolstad) Kurtz. She attended Barney School No. 2 and graduated from Wyndmere High School in 1950. She was a 1954 graduate of North Dakota State University receiving a Bachelor of Science in Home Economics Education. She was a member of the following honorary and professional societies: Phi Kappa Phi, Phi Upsilon Omicron, Kappa Delta Pi and Mortar Board. She received the Mary E. Laycock Scholarship. Following graduation, she taught Vocational Home Economics at Bottineau and Valley City High Schools. On June 30, 1956 she married Russell H. Slotten in Wyndmere, ND. In July 1956, she accepted the position of Interim Associate Home Management Specialist with the North Dakota Extension Service at North Dakota State University (NDSU). In February 1957, she accompanied her husband to Ft. Bliss, Texas when he was called to active duty with the U.S. Army. He was later assigned to Eielson Air Force Base, Fairbanks, Alaska. While Russell was overseas, she taught Vocational Home Economics at Wyndmere High School. She joined Russ on January 1, 1958 and the couple lived for two years on Eielson Air Force Base. During this time, Beverly was employed by the Base Education Office as a Testing Specialist. Returning to Fargo, ND in 1959, she resumed employment for one year at North Dakota State University as Interim Textiles and Clothing Specialist with the NDSU Extension Service. Beverly worked professionally part-time in several areas of Home Economics as: Director of Adult Education, Fargo Public Schools, Fargo Public Schools adult clothing teacher (evening classes and a television course: “Successful Sewing” on KXJB-TV and WDAY-TV). In 1967, she accepted a Graduate Assistantship in Home Economics Education (teaching and teacher education supervision). She received a Master of Science Degree in 1969 and worked from 1969 to 1972 at NDSU in the position of Assistant Professor of Home Economics Education. She resigned this position to accompany her husband to Eden Prairie, MN. Later, she became the Teacher/Coordinator of the Textile and Apparel Careers Program, Clay County Vocational Cooperative Center, Moorhead, MN. In 1979, Beverly began doctoral studies in the Department of Educational Policy and Administration at the University of Minnesota. She served one year as Administrative Intern in the College of Home Economics at NDSU. In 1985, she accepted a position with the West Central Educational Cooperative Served Unit (ECSU) in Fergus Falls, MN. She completed her career as Career/Vocational and Technology Integration Coordinator and Executive Director of the Valley and Lakes Education District located at West Central ECSU. She has received several awards/honors in her professional field including North Dakota Vocational Association Award of Excellence, Phi Upsilon Omicron Outstanding Community Service Award, Outstanding Secondary Vocational Educational Teacher of the Year, Merit Winner for Minnesota Home Economics Teacher of the Year, American Home Economics Association and Phi Upsilon Omicron Fellowship Doctoral Study Awards. Her professional volunteer and community involvement includes member of Visiting Board to the College of Home Economics at NDSU and member of State Home Economics Advisory Council, Minnesota Extension Service. She also served as vice president of the Minnesota Home Economics Association and president of Phi Upsilon Omicron – both active and alumni groups and the Fargo-Moorhead Home Economics Club. She as a member of Minnesota Association of School Administrators. She was a charter member of Hope Lutheran Church and served in leadership positions at three congregations: Hope Lutheran Church, Fargo, Olivet Lutheran Church, Fargo and Trinity Lutheran Church, Pelican Rapids, MN. Beverly was preceded in death by her parents, sister Rosemary Hagen, brothers-in-law Wayne Slotten, Dale Slotten, George Schaffhausen and sister-in-law Loraine Slotten. She is survived by her husband Russell (Russ) of 64 years; two children: David (Vanessa) Slotten, Pelican Rapids, MN and Janelle (Terry) Strom, Bend, OR; sister Jocelyn Schaffhausen, St. Paul, MN, brother Clint (Pat) Kurtz, Norwood, MN, brother-in-law Art Hagen, McCloud, ND and sister-in-law Dulcie Slotten, Fargo, ND; and four grandchildren: Logan and Grant Strom, and Larisa and Erik Slotten. A private family service will be held at a later date at Faith Lutheran Cemetery, Dwight, ND.
