Marlene Carmen Heggen was born on June 18, 1932 in Rothsay, MN, to Arthur and Thelma (Flatin) Heggen. She was baptized and confirmed at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Rothsay and graduated from Rothsay High School in 1950. Following graduation, she went to work for Lake Region Electrical Coop in Pelican Rapids, where she worked in the office. On November 8, 1952, she married K. Milton Haugrud at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Rothsay, and they moved to their dairy farm outside of Pelican Rapids where they farmed together for 40 years and raised 3 children. In 1992, they moved into their present home in Pelican Rapids.Marlene was a member of Grove Lake Lutheran Church and active in many congregation and community programs including Ladies Aid, Bible Study, Meals on Wheels, Homemakers Club, 4-H, and volunteering at the Good Samaritan Center. She enjoyed cooking, baking, gardening, sewing, reading, and spending time with her grandchildren. Marlene and Milton have traveled to Arizona for many winters to visit with family and friends.Marlene, age 74, passed away on Wednesday, May 2, 2007, at MeritCare Hospital in Fargo, North Dakota, surrounded by her family.Marlene is survived by her husband, Milton of Pelican Rapids; one daughter, Cheryl (Leslie) Sass of Hudson, WI; two sons: Keith (Bonita) Haugrud, and Bradley (Shawn) Haugrud, both of Pelican Rapids, MN; one sister, Ardeth Baumgartner of Fargo, ND; 7 grandchildren: Carrie (Kyle) McLaughlin, Tim (Gretchen) Sass, Mindy ( Kristoff) Dietz, Jennifer Sass, Brandon Haugrud, Kirsten Haugrud, and Katlyn Haugrud; and 2 great-grandsons: Finn McLaughlin, and newborn baby Dietz.Marlene was preceded in death by her parents.Blessed Be The Memory Of Marlene HaugrudMemorials preferred to Good Samaritan Center or Grove Lake Lutheran Church (Handicap Accessibility Project).
