Marlene Howey, age 65, a resident of Pelican Rapids, Minnesota, died on Monday, July13, 2009, at her home in Pelican Rapids.Marlene Lois Olson was born June 8, 1944, in Clark, South Dakota, the daughter of Marvin Olson and Leona (Wangen) Gully.She was baptized on July 1, 1944, and confirmed on June 1, 1958 at Pleasant Lutheran Church in Vienna, SD.She attended school in Vienna until she moved to Bryant, South Dakota, and graduated from Bryant High School in 1962. Upon graduation she worked as a waitress in Watertown, SD where she met Richard Smith.On October 5, 1963, they were united in marriage in Bryant, SD.Marlene worked on a turkey farm in Lanesboro, MN for many years before working at Cherry Lane Turkeys in Sioux City, IA.In 1976 they moved to Pelican Rapids where she worked for Howard Carlson before working for Jennie-o Turkeys.On October 26, 1995, she was united in marriage to Eugene Howey in Las Vegas, NV.Together they ran the Hillside Apartments and Motel in Pelican Rapids until February of 1997 when Eugene died.Marlene continued to manage the apartments and motel for one more year after Genes death.Marlene was currently employed by West Central Turkey in Pelican Rapids where she had worked for 33 years.Marlene was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Pelican Rapids.She loved to spend time with her grandchildren and enjoyed going to the casino with her mother.Grandmas birthday dinners were very special to her.Marlene always had a smile on her face and would help anyone who needed it.She was a joy to anyone that let her into their life, she was a wonderful mother, sister, daughter, grandmother, and friend. When you had a bad day Marlene was one that you could call and she would lend you a listening ear, she would help you in any time of need.Marlene is survived by her daughters:Marlette (Lee) Butterworthsmith, Pelican Rapids, MN, Danita (Jim) Matykiewicz, Pelican Rapids, MN, and Dixie (Zach Carlson) Smith, Vergas, MN; mother, Leona Gully, Watertown, SD; seven grandchildren: Candice (B.J. Gholson) Henjum, Eric (Alicia) Henjum, Kendric (Jessie Olson) Henjum, Latessa Matykiewicz, Ashlea Matykiewicz, Wyatt Carlson, and Nathan Carlson, Seth Butterworth; one great-grandson, Richard Henjum; two sisters: Rozann (Terry) Corbin, Sioux Falls, SD, and Valerie (Randy) Jensen, Watertown, SD; sister-in-law, Marilyn Olson, Watertown, SD; and many nieces and nephews.She was preceded in death by her father, Marvin Olson; her husbands, Richard Smith and Eugene Howey; brothers, Neil and Lyle.Blessed Be The Memory of Marlene Howey
