Virginia Trane, age 93, a resident of Pelican Rapids, Minnesota, died on Friday, February 18, 2011, at Pelican Valley Nursing Home in Pelican Rapids.Virginia June Brown was born June 24, 1917, in McClusky, North Dakota, the daughter of Dr. Fredrick and Nida (Clodfelter) Brown. Her father was a prairie doctor and her mother a nurse. The family moved to Valley City, North Dakota, where Virginia graduated from high school. She continued her education at NDSU majoring in Home Economics, Science, and English. She taught school in Northwood, North Dakota, for one year and then two years in Pelican Rapids, Minnesota. In Pelican Rapids she met Charles Trane during WWII. They were married June 21, 1943, in Santa Barbara, California. During the war she worked at Camp Cooke in California at the station hospital, as an inspector for the Ration Board. She also taught Home Economics in Lompoc, California. In 1946, they returned to Pelican Rapids. While living in Pelican Rapids, she was a substitute teacher at the high school. Charles preceded her in death on April 15, 1997. Virginia moved from the Mill Pond Apartments to Pelican Valley Nursing Home in 2005.Virginia was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Pelican Rapids where she taught Luther League and participated in circle and ladies aid. During Pastor A. Grimstad's interim ministry she received one year of Christian Religion. She used this education in her church work giving talks and leading a ladies inter-denominational bible study (Campus Crusade materials) for 20 years. Virginia and Charlie became charter members of Calvary Evangelical Free Church in Pelican Rapids where she continued to be active in church activities. For many years, Virginia was a member of the Women's Civic Club. For over 50 years she was one of 12 members of the Birthday Club.She loved being a grandmother and took an active part in her grandchildren's lives; they were a delight in her life.Virginia is survived by daughters: Elizabeth (Roy) Rossum, Dent, MN, and Cindy (Loren Bekkerus) Trane, Pelican Rapids, MN; a son, Fred (Kathryn) Trane, Athens, GA; 7 grandchildren: Peter Rossum, John (Paula) Rossum, Maureen (Tim) Goodwin, John Trane, Beth (Luke) Guthrie, Cody and Alexa Bekkerus; 5 great-grandchildren: Mattie and Lainey Rossum, Payton Rossum, Canaan and Shiloh Goodwin; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Dr. Fredrick and Nida; a brother, George; and her husband, Charles.Memorials are preferred to Pelican Valley Nursing Home.
