Helen Solinger

Helen Solinger, 83, of Pelican Rapids, died on Friday, March 25, 2011, at the Good Samaritan Center in Pelican Rapids. Helen Virginia Backstrom was born September 4, 1927, in Erhard's Grove Township to Walter and Ruth (Johnson) Backstrom, and grew up on her family's farm. She was baptized and confirmed at Central Lutheran Church in Erhard's Grove Township, and remained a lifelong member. Helen attended District 288 Hillcrest country school, and graduated from Pelican Rapids High School in 1946.After completing high school Helen lived in Pelican Rapids, employed at Dr. Venables' dental clinic, and later at Swan Drug store. She enjoyed her independence as a single working woman, having fun with friends and making her own way in life. She married Eugene Solinger of Lida Township on March 27, 1954, at St. Leonard's Catholic Church in Pelican Rapids, after a courtship that began at Perry's Supper Club on Lake Lida. Together they owned and operated Solinger's Resort on Lake Lida. Helen made a great contribution to the success of the business, helping families make vacation memories over several decades. She enjoyed getting to know her customers, referring to them as "good folks." She was happy that she could remain living in her home on the resort until a few days before her death.Helen put her family first, working hard to give her husband and children a secure and beautiful home. She vigilantly looked after the physical needs and moral education of her children, always standing up for their best interests. She dearly loved and enjoyed her grandchildren, giving hugs, pinches, and sage advice. She provided a warm and welcoming setting for many family holidays and celebrations. Her sense of humor and laugh brought smiles to many around her.Helen had a passion for gardening and flowers, working in her own yard, at her church, and on the resort grounds to add beauty to other's lives. She is survived by her children, Teresa (Robert) Hunt of Wadena MN, Jon (Barbara) Solinger of Pelican Rapids MN, and Joseph (Amy) Solinger of Hutchinson MN, grandchildren: Emily Hunt, Marie Hunt, Amanda Solinger, and Violet Solinger; a brother, Kenneth Backstrom of Pelican Rapids, and sisters LuVerne (Bill) Mangin of LaMoure ND and Marlys (Donald) Kubitz of Pelican Rapids MN; sister-in-law, Judy Solinger, Pelican Rapids; and nieces and nephews.She was preceded in death by her husband Gene on May 1, 1999, her parents, and brothers Raymond and Howard.Blessed Be The Memory Of Helen SolingerFuneral Home:Larson Funeral Home304 3rd Street S.E.Pelican Rapids, MNUS 56572
