Fern Hanson, age 88, a resident of Fergus Falls, Minnesota, formerly of Vergas, died on Sunday, June 12, 2011, at PioneerCare Center of Fergus Falls.Fern Nettie Pierce was born on August 20, 1922, in Lida Township, near Vergas, Minnesota, the daughter of Leroid and Gertrude (Brown) Pierce. In 1944, she married Archie Johnson at Central Lutheran Church in rural Pelican Rapids. From January to August of 1945, Archie and Fern lived in Bremerton, Washington, where they worked at the Naval Torpedo Station (NTS). They moved back to Minnesota and resided in Lida Township. Archie died in 1948 in a construction accident. In 1951, Fern married Clifford Hanson at the Baptist Church parsonage in Vergas. Clifford and Fern were dairy farmers in Lida Township. Clifford preceded Fern in death in 2005.Fern was a member of First Congregational United Church of Christ in Pelican Rapids where she was active in women's fellowship, quilting, serving Rotary, and choir. Fern adored children. The children of her neighbors and family had a special place in her heart; they appreciated the support and care she gave them. Fern is survived by her nephews: Milo (Carolyn) Pierce and Milton (Candie) Pierce, Jr.; nieces: Ann (Frank) Spanjer and Cindy (Gerald) Smoot; many nieces and nephews, great and great-great nieces and nephews; and her cousins.
