Rodney Sundby, age 87, a resident of Rothsay, Minnesota died Wednesday, November 30, 2011 at the Lake Region Health Care Center in Fergus Falls. William Rodney Sundby was born September 25, 1924 in Sunburst, Montana the son of Willie and Gilma (Hovland) Sundby. He was baptized on November 3, 1924 in Bethania, Montana. He lived in Montana and Canada while his father worked in the oil fields before moving to farm near Pelican Rapids in 1930. He attended school in District 59 and high school in Pelican Rapids. Rodney was confirmed on October 22, 1939 at North Immanuel Lutheran Church near Pelican Rapids. In 1945 he joined the United States Army serving in the Signal Core during the occupation of Japan and was discharged in 1946. On December 30, 1950 he was united in marriage to Elaine Toso at the Bride's parent's home in rural Esmond, North Dakota. For 38 years Rodney worked as a truck driver owning gravel and hay trucks before working for Fosse Transport, Indianhead, Quickie, and Dahlen. After his retirement he drove school bus for the Rothsay School District and also performed farm work for Don Tollerud.He was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Rothsay, a 20 year member of the Rothsay Fire Department, and the American Legion. Rodney enjoyed hunting, fishing and snowmobiling. He will be dearly missed by his wife of 60 years, Elaine; sons, Roger of Rothsay, Minnesota, Paul of Vergas, Minnesota, Jon of Moorhead, Minnesota and Eric (Cindy) of Vergas, Minnesota; granddaughters, Bridget (Todd) Jackson of Fargo, North Dakota and Amanda Sundby of Moorhead, Minnesota.
