Marvin L. Colness, age 86, of Sedona, Arizona died Wednesday, April 11, 2012 at the Good Samaritan Center in Battle Lake, Minnesota.Marvin Leslie Colness was born in Norwegian Grove Township, rural Pelican Rapids, Minnesota the son of Eli and Clara (Aarness) Colness. He was raised there and worked on the family farm several years. Marvin then served in the United States Army Tank Division during the Korean War. He returned home and worked on the Great Northern Railroad for two years. On June 5, 1953 he was united in marriage to LaVerne Thompson at North Immanuel Lutheran Church near Pelican Rapids. He then began working at the Railroad Department of Reserve Mining Company at Silver Bay for thirty one years retiring in 1986. Marvin was resident of the Good Samaritan Center in Pelican Rapids for several years. He was a lifetime member of North Immanuel Lutheran Church and also a member of the American Legion in Arizona. Marvin enjoyed traveling, old tyme dancing, camping, reading, woodworking and playing the harmonica. He attended many Polka Fests in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, South Dakota and Ohio.He is survived by his wife of 58 years, LaVerne; neice: Marjorie (LeRoy) Huseby of Moorhead, Minnesota; brothers-in-law: Lanny (Diane) Thompson of Minnetonka, Minnesota and Loren (Kim) Thompson of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota; sister-in-laws: Corrine Klabunde of Dent, Minnesota and Arlene (Darrell) Costain of West Fargo and many nieces and nephews on the Thompson side of the family.He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Verna Colness who died at birth and Lorraine (Elvin) Erickson. Visitation: Sunday, April 15, 2012, from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the Larson Funeral Home, Pelican Rapids, Minnesota. Visitation will resume one hour prior to services in the church.
