Carlton Herbert Onsum

Carlton Onsum, age 95, a resident of Pelican Rapids, Minnesota, died on Tuesday, May 1, 2012, at the Pelican Valley Nursing Home in Pelican Rapids.Carlton Herbert Onsum was born September 19, 1916 at the Boysen Hospital in Pelican Rapids, MN, the son of Carl and Kaija (Johanesen) Onsum. He was baptized and confirmed at Ringsaker Lutheran Church in Pelican Rapids and attended District #26 country school. As a young man, he worked along side his dad with the farming and raising dairy cattle. He purchased the family farm in 1950. Carlton was united in marriage to Elsie Hendrickson December 16, 1945. They retired from farming in 1990. Elsie died October 30, 1991.Carlton was an active member of the Pelican Rapids Senior Center where he enjoyed the friendships, food and card playing. He enjoyed trips to Mahnomen and, of course, coffee and goodies on the van! He felt very honored while at the Good Samaritan Home when he was crowned Valentine's Day King. Card playing, bingo, talking on the phone, visiting and watching TV to keep up with local and national news and sports also filled his days.In 2006 Carlton moved into the Mill Pond View Apts. Due to failing health, he then moved into the Good Samaritan Home in November, 2010. He was relocated to the Pioneer Care in Fergus Falls for a brief stay until a vacancy opened at Pelican Valley Nursing Home on March 30, 2012, and resided there until his death May 1, 2012, at the age of 95.Carlton is survived by his sister, Eleanor (Arnold) Opsahl, Rothsay, MN; his sister-in-law, Deloris (Kenneth) Onsum, Minneapolis, MN; several nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Elsie; brothers: Marvin and Kenneth; sisters: Bernice Pederson and Alice Thorson; nephew, Dale Pederson.Visitation: Monday, May 7, 2012, 9:30 11:00 a.m. prior to the service at the church.Service: 11:00 a.m., Monday, May 7, 2012, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Pelican Rapids, MN Clergy: Pastor Laurie Skow-AndersonBurial: Ringsaker Cemetery, Rural Pelican Rapids, MN Funeral Home:Larson Funeral Home304 3rd Street S.E.Pelican Rapids, MNUS 56572
