Verlyn Chapin, age 77, a resident of Pelican Rapids, MN, died peacefully in his sleep on Tues, April 23, 2013, at his residence after a short battle with lung cancer. Verlyn Duane Chapin was born on January 7th 1936 in Star Lake Township Ottertail County, Minnesota to Horace and Evelyn Marie (Swanson) Chapin. He was baptized and confirmed at Maine Presbyterian Church. After attending school in districts 120 & 136 as well as Underwood, he graduated from Pelican Rapids High School in 1954. After graduation he enlisted and served in the Air Force and was stationed in California, Wyoming and Germany from 1954 till 1958. He returned to run the family farm after the death of his father. He then worked at Korby Construction doing road and bridge work. Verlyn was united in marriage to Bonnie Rae Sletten on May 12th 1962. After marriage, Verlyn and Bonnie lived in Minneapolis, St Louis Park, Rosemount, returning to Pelican Rapids to live in 1973.Verlyn worked with Clark-Lift forklift sales and repair in the Twin Cities and Fargo Moorhead areas for 24 years. He was a member of the 49er Union. He sold and maintained grain dryers and grain handling equipment all over the Dakotas and Minnesota while working for DryMor in Alexandria. He also sold and delivered automotive frame straightening equipment for Chassis Liner. In the midst of all that he also farmed for a few years, milking cows, and raising pigs. Verlyn was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. He enjoyed playing with his grandchildren, fishing, hunting, fixing things, watching the hummingbirds at the feeders, Saturday morning Bible Study, and trips to Alaska to hunt and fish with his sons and his friends. He played a pretty good game of cribbage and horseshoes as well. Verlyn is survived by wife Bonnie of nearly 51 years, children Greg (Carolyn) Chapin, Fairbanks, Alaska; Mike (Janelle) Chapin, Ester, Alaska; Randy (Jessica) Chapin, Pelican Rapids MN; Dana (Scott) Hendricks, Lake Park, MN; 10 grandchildren: August, Keegan, Russell, Dakota, Areena, Logan, Bailee, Harliegh, Daryan and Shayla, sister in law Marilyn (Harley) Chapin, Plymouth MN, and several nieces and nephews. Verlyn was preceded in death by his parents, brother Harley, and step father Walt Shofner. The family wishes to thank the Fargo Veterans Hospital, doctors and nurses and Hospice of Red River Valley for the excellent care he received. Visitation: Thursday, 5:00-7:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at Larson Funeral Home, Pelican Rapids, MN and resumes one hour prior to the service at the church.
