Shirley Fay (Baker) Maahs, age 77, of Detroit Lakes, MN, passed away Saturday, September 7, 2013 at Pelican Valley Nursing Home in Pelican Rapids with her husband by her side. Shirley was the daughter of Wyeth "Bud" and Fay (Robinson) Baker. She was born January 9, 1936 in Sisseton, SD, and on Saturday, September 7, she left this world to be with her Lord and Savior Christ, and other loved ones in God's glorious kingdom of heaven.On May 15, 1954 she was wed to Alfred "Bud" Maahs in Cook, MN. After Bud proposed, Shirley only had 3 days to plan a wedding and pack up everything she had to move to Texas with him. In the many years to follow they traveled all around the states and to England and Germany, while Bud served in the Air Force. During this time she raised six beautiful daughters, out numbering Bud 7 to 1. When Bud served in the military, Shirley worked as a car-hop attendant and sold Avon for a while. Eventually in the late 70's, Shirley and her family settled back around the Pelican Rapids area, where she was active in bowling leagues and coaching many of the area youths in softball. Shirley and Bud owned and operated Bud's Mobil from 1975 to 1987 living in Erhard. From 1987 to 1991 they lived on Tonseth Lake near Erhard. Shirley worked as the kitchen manager at Swan's Drug in Pelican Rapids. Then Shirley and Bud moved to Fergus Falls where Shirley worked as a waitress at Cheng Tu's Restaurant for six years. Shirley is survived by her adoring husband; six daughters: Vickey Johnson, Detroit Lakes, MN, Cindey (Will) Collins, Pelican Rapids, MN, Wendey (Kevin) Soberg, Pelican Rapids, MN Shelley Gilbert (Gary Brekkestran), Horace, ND, Mickey (Allen) Haarstad, Pelican Rapids, MN, Kelley (Clint) Glaser, Bullhead City, AZ; 10 grandchildren: Torrey (Matt) Dawson, Bradley (Angela) Van Zee, Matt (Anne) Soberg, Tracey (Dan) Bonitatibus, Christa (Jeremiah) Walberg, Tony (Sarah) Gilbert, Ben Haarstad, Joe (Molly) Gilbert, Austin Haarstad, and Brady Glaser; 11 great-grandchildren; her two brothers: Gail Baker and Larry Baker.She is preceded in death by her parents; two brothers: Wayne Hertie and Terry Baker; sister, Vivan Jarva; two sons-in-law: Bradley Gilbert and Joel Johnson.Shirley will be missed dearly by all who knew her and by anyone who ever met her!Visitation: Thursday, September 12, 2013 from 5:00 p.m. 7:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at Larson Funeral Home, Pelican Rapids, Minnesota.
