Hazel Herk, age 86, of rural Vergas, Minnesota, passed away November 17, 2013, at Essentia Health in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. Hazel Frances (Peterson) Herk was born January 2, 1927 in Marshall County near Middle River, Minnesota to Elmer and Florence (Knutson) Peterson. Hazel was united in marriage to Lyle James Herk on November 2, 1948 in Valley City, ND. They lived in Valley City, ND, Seattle, Washington, Middle River, MN and Fargo-Moorhead. Then in 1965 they moved to their farm in rural Vergas, MN. Hazel worked at West Central Turkey in Pelican Rapids for many years and for 10 years she worked at Young Life Castaway Club on Pelican Lake. Hazel will be remembered for "Hazel's Raspberry Patch". She raised and sold raspberries on the Vergas farm for many years. Her customers would wait all year for the crop to be "ready". Each berry had to placed exactly so in the box before she sold them.Hazel was an immaculate homemaker, served great Sunday meals after church for her family, made the best Norwegian Potato Dumplings and loved to play BINGO. Hazel's children all knew they were her favorite and she knew when to call each one. Marilynn for the best haircuts; Marietta for medical needs; Maryann for great laughs, playing card and helping her at home; Dennis for getting anything to work again or move something; Marion for making her home 'Moms Home' for the past six months and getting the lucky Bingo table; Dale for his daily phone call she waited for. Hazel is survived by 6 children: Marilynn Sparling, Detroit Lakes, MN; Marietta( Johnnie) Stowers, Vergas, MN; Maryann Cusey, Tracy, MN; Dennis Herk, Vergas, MN; Marion(Steve) Sleen, Vergas, MN; Dale Herk, Frazee, MN: 8 grandchildren: Jason Stowers, Lynn Cusey, Craig Sleen, Nikki Russel, Jim Sleen, Jesse Stowers, Keith Sleen, and Tyler Herk; 16 great-grandchildren: 5 Brothers and Sisters: Floyd (Lois) Peterson, Middle River, MN; Shirley Stacey, CA; Lila (Duane) Knutson, Bagley, MN; Ronnie(Sheila) Peterson, Middle River, MN and Elmer Peterson, Twin Valley, MN. Hazel is preceded in death by her husband Lyle Herk June 18, 1993, two infant children, her parents Elmer and Florence Peterson, a granddaughter Tabitha Herk Janssen, 6 brothers and sisters: Margaret (Arne) Johnson; Donna Peterson; Ervin (Betty) Peterson; Donnie Peterson; Audrey Peterson; and Sharon Gustafson.
