Winton Lee Nelson

Winton Lee Nelson, age 71, of Pelican Rapids, MN, died Tuesday, September 1, 2015 at Pelican Valley Nursing Home, Pelican Rapids, MN.Winton Lee Nelson was born June 22, 1944 in Pelican Rapids, MN, to Neil and Edna (Ness) Nelson. He was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Pelican Rapids. He attended school in Pelican Rapids, graduating from Pelican Rapids High School in 1962. Winton was proud to serve in the United States Army during the Vietnam War from 1963 to 1966. He continued his military duty serving non-active in the reserves until 1969.On December 31, 1970 Winton was united in marriage to Cheryl (Maneval) Nelson to this union four children were born: Shawn, Donna, Matthew and Ryan. Winton worked as a heavy equipment operator for Egge Construction for 38 years retiring in the fall of 2003. In December of 2009, Winton moved to Vergas Assisted Living, Vergas, MN, then to the Pelican Valley Nursing Home in December 2013 due to declining health.Winton was a member of North Immanuel Lutheran Church and V.F.W. Post #5252 of Pelican Rapids. For many years Winton collected eagles and cherished his collection. Winton especially enjoyed the outdoors teaching his children about hunting and fishing. He always put all six of his grandchildren on a pedestal.Winton is survived by his children, Shawn (Amy) Nelson, Vergas, MN, Donna Nelson, Fargo, ND, Matthew (Ashley) Nelson, Vergas, MN, and Ryan (Amber) Nelson, Dilworth, MN; six grandsons: Tyler Lynnes, Bailey Lynnes, Devan Nelson, Brezlin Nelson, Colton Nelson and Hayden Nelson; brothers: Stanton (Carolyn) Nelson, Matthews, NC, Byron (Patty) Nelson, Glen Nelson and LeRoy Nelson, all of Pelican Rapids; sisters: Yvonne Wells, Ruthie Hansen, Gail (Randy) Narveson, all of Pelican Rapids and Lita Nelson, Mapleton, ND, and numerous nieces and nephews.He is preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: Mark, Dennis and Duane; sister Karen Kubitz, sister-in-law Jo Nelson and brother-in-law Rick Hansen.Visitation: Friday, September 4, 2015 from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. with a Prayer Service at 6:30 p.m.at Larson Funeral Home, Pelican Rapids, MN.
