Fern Irene Nettestad, age 96, a resident of Pelican Rapids, Minnesota, died Monday, November 14, 2016 at Pelican Valley Health Center, Pelican Rapids, MN.Fern was born January 29, 1920 in Pelican Rapids, MN, to Fred and Inga (Hauge) Huseby. She was baptized and confirmed at Norwegian Grove Church near Pelican Rapids. For several years Fern helped neighboring farmers with household chores. On November 10, 1940 Fern was united in marriage to Orville Nettestad at the South Immanuel Parsonage near Rothsay. For a period of time Fern worked at West Central Turkey Plant on the pack line. Later she was better known for being a pastry chef at the B&L, Swan Drug, and Mill Pond Cafs. Orville died on November 7, 1982. Then Fern retired to the country where she became known for her lefse making during the holiday season. In 2001 Fern moved in to the Good Samaritan Center and in May 2008 entered the Pelican Valley Nursing Home. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, baking, and cooking. One of Fern's favorite shows to watch was the Oprah Winfrey Show. She was a lifelong member of South Immanuel Lutheran Church and their ladies aid. Fern is survived by her daughter Faye (Al) Sandvig, Pelican Rapids; son Bruce (Sheila) Nettestad, Pelican Rapids; five grandchildren: Robert Olson, Mike Olson, Karl Olson, Peter Olson and Amy Nettestad; five great-grandchildren: Jacob, Isaac, Thea, Nolan, and Ronin; and numerous nieces and nephews.She is preceded in death by her parents; husband Orville; grandson Gust; son-in-law Johnny Olson; brothers: Austin and Raymond; sisters: Stella Nettestad and Dorothy Arneson.Memorials preferred to the Pelican Valley Nursing Home.Visitation: 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., Saturday, November 19, 2016, at South Immanuel Church, Rural Rothsay, Minnesota.Service: 2:00 p.m., Saturday, November 19, 2016, at South Immanuel Church, Rural Rothsay, Minnesota.Burial: South Immanuel Cemetery, Rural Rothsay, Minnesota.Clergy: Pastor Phil TobinFuneral Home: Larson Funeral Home, Pelican Rapids, MinnesotaPlease keep Fern's family in your thoughts and prayers.
